OpenSmash-Ultimate and the ssbu-recomp name
Updated · Covers OpenSmash runtime-c2ca705
OpenSmash-Ultimate is the project in Denkishi’s ssbu-recomp repository. These names refer to the same project. Its runtime prereleases support the installer’s build process; they are not complete game packages.

What is ssbu-recomp?
OpenSmash-Ultimate's repository is Denkishi/ssbu-recomp. It statically recompiles supported game code into a native program and uses a Vulkan renderer.

The project supplies tools and runtime code. You need your own compatible existing game files. It recognises specific game versions; see game-version checks.
Source downloads and runtime versions
The source installer chooses a prebuilt runtime that matches its source tree. With a matching package it can build without MSVC Build Tools; a mismatched source tree may refuse that path.
Runtime tags can change frequently. For source eac10a1, the installer selects runtime-c2ca705. Let the installer select its matching package instead of combining source and runtime by filename alone.
Where you can play
Windows has a graphical installer. Linux has a native SDL3/Vulkan build, with testing so far on one CachyOS/NVIDIA/Wayland PC. Linux lacks the Windows F1 menu, online path and album movie recording.
OpenSmash’s Mac build is an early experiment with no completed gameplay test. Use the Windows or Linux setup path.
The project’s native hook system supports its own C++/DLL mod path. New fighter packaging remains in progress. Use Skyline or HDR only when the mod author explicitly supports this PC port, platform and game version. Online remains experimental. Windows has a separate, opt-in rollback test build and an F1 switch; normal sessions use delay-based networking. The test needs the matching ssbu_game_r1.dll and ssbu_native_rb.exe, with both players on the same project/game version and the option enabled. Use the rollback build and activation checks before trying it.
Install it or report a bug
Start with program sources, then choose Windows or Linux. Use the two-project comparison before switching a working setup.
For build or startup errors, keep the installer’s message, run log and source/runtime identifiers. Follow troubleshooting before opening OpenSmash Issues. The project is distributed under GPLv3.
